ABOUT THIS YEAR’S SUMMIT
The 11th Creative Time Summit, an annual convening for thinkers, dreamers, and doers working at the intersection of art and politics, was held in Miami for the first time November 1-3 of 2018. Titled On Archipelagos and Other Imaginaries—Collective Strategies to Inhabit the World, it took coalition as the central theme, and utilized the archipelago as a framework to delve into Miami’s historical connection to the Caribbean and, by extension, to Latin America and the entire world. The topics under discussion ranged from immigration and borders to climate realities, notions of intersectional justice, gentrification, tourism as an enabler for neocolonialism, and the roles art and activism can play in all these pressing issues.
The Summit was made up of four thematic sections: “Facing climate realities, reimagining a green future,” “Toward an intersectional justice,” “Resisting displacement and violence,” and “On boundaries and a borderless future.”
These themes were explored through community-driven breakout sessions, social events, roundtable discussions, workshops, panels, field trips, interactive performances, screenings, and other creative formats designed to share tools, strategies, and actions with over 1,000 international and local attendees.
Language: For the first time, the Summit was presented in both English and Spanish. As we continue to respond to local, regional and international contexts, we also acknowledge this year the diversity of languages spoken in the Caribbean, which also includes French and Creole. While for this edition of the Summit we were only able to offer English and Spanish, which represent the most spoken languages in our host city of Miami, the Summit will continue to strive to become more accessible and inclusive for our attendees.

The final day of the Summit featured e over 30 group discussions, workshops, and field trips at various locations around Miami. FILM PROGRAM
The Summit held its inaugural Film Series in Miami-Beach, featuring showings by filmmakers from the Miami-Florida area, the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond, highlighting the richness and diversity of independent filmmaking. The selected films broadly engaged with the major themes of this year’s Summit, encouraging thoughtful conversations around borders and migration, ecological struggles, gender politics, and economic inequality.

ABOUT THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND THE CULTURAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL
The Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council develop cultural excellence, diversity and participation throughout Miami-Dade County by strategically creating and promoting opportunities for artists and cultural organizations, and our residents and visitors who are their audiences. Through staff, board and programmatic resources, the Department, the Council and the Trust promote, coordinate and support Miami-Dade County’s more than 1,000 not-for-profit cultural organizations as well as thousands of resident artists through grants, technical assistance, public information and interactive community planning. The Department directs the Art in Public Places program and serves its board, the Art in Public Places Trust, commissioning, curating, maintaining and promoting the County’s art collection. The Department receives funding through the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida through the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the John S. and James L. CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The 11th Creative Time Summit, On Archipelagos and Other Imaginaries: Collective Strategies to Inhabit the World, took place in Miami, FL, from November 1-3. The Summit was co-presented with Art in Public Places of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, with leading support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
American poet Fred Moten defines ‘coalition’ as the recognition that practices of dispossession, whether they are cultural, political, environmental, or economical, whether they are occurring in our immediate environment or at a far distance, affects us all.* To that extent, ‘coalition’ is the realization of an unavoidable connectedness: we are all in this together.
As a platform for such connectedness, the Creative Time Summit 2018 gathered artists, thinkers, activists, and cultural producers whose practices stimulate others into emancipatory projects formulated under the desire for planetary thinking. Using the archipelago as a framework for questioning colonial and postcolonial ways of seeing and thinking, we delved into Miami’s historical connection to the Caribbean and, by extension, to Latin America and the entire world. Namely, we will shed light onto common, and at times contradicting narratives of regions defined by international migrations and depopulation, queer cultures, indigenous ways of being, tourism industries, and ecological disasters, by engaging with de-colonial dialogues and new social imaginaries.
2018 commemorated a milestone in the history of international coalitions and solidarity: half a century later, we are reminded of the resilience of the struggles of 1968 in the Americas and around the world. Today, artists, activists, students, dreamers and community organizers are actively challenging their governments to establish a different relationship with the environment, while refusing the enclosure of land, wealth, and culture, and collectively inventing alternative social institutions.
While remaining critical of current economic and political power structures imbued with renewed neo-colonial aspirations, we collectively grappled with the possibilities that art and culture offer and respond to current political struggles and reimaginings of dissent. We built upon the experiences of each of our participants, facilitating exchanges and collaborations that we envision will have a lasting effect upon public opinion long after the Summit’s closing remarks. Ultimately, the 2018 Summit aims to reflect upon the contingencies of our time, urging all of us to take an active role as agents bringing about change and social justice.
