Invincible

Detroit-based MC Invincible scripts lyrics to communicate both personal experience and a desire to affect social change through clear delivery, witty wordplay, and conceptual songwriting. Invincible’s “Locusts,” which inspired a music video/documentary with commentary from housing activists and teenagers about changes in their neighborhood, is an incisive critique of the current efforts to beautify downtown Detroit, swapping metaphors for gentrification and large-scale colonization. They have also worked with Detroit Summer, a multi-racial, inter-generational collective in Detroit that has worked to transform communities through youth facilitative leadership, creativity, and collective action for the past decade. The artist co-coordinated and co-founded Detroit Future Youth, a network that supports social justice and media-based youth projects throughout the city.

Why we love Invincible:

• Their track “Locusts” has inspired a music video/documentary with commentary from housing activists and teenagers about changes in their neighborhood

• They formed their own fair-trade hip-hop label, Emergence Music, in order to avoid signing to a major label
