Locating the Power of Baltimore’s Cultural Producers

What does it mean and what are the difficulties of being a cultural producer in a city like Baltimore? While the arts are not a silver bullet for cities, their role in urban economic development is highly underestimated. What kinds of power do we occupy? Where does our power come from? How is it best used? What power do we have to create real change?


Amy Sherald is a painter and host of regular Baltimore discussion group, Tubman Table. She received her M.F.A in 2004 from Maryland Institute College and recently won the 2016 National Portrait Gallery Outwin Boochever Portrait competition. She teaches art to inmates at the Baltimore City Detention Center, and is currently artist in residence at the Creative Alliance.
